Inspired by the dark silhouettes of trees while hiking on a bright day, “Komorebi” uses a haze of charcoal to create a sense of depth in this balanced composition. “I am exploring the idea of light and shadow as rays of the sun cascading through branches in a dense winter forest,” explains Stephane Fontaine. Original artwork was created using charcoal from the artist’s wood stove, painted over to achieve a unique smeared look. Reproduced here to emulate the artist’s original techniques. Stephane Fontaine is an Ontario-based artist who favors exploring different materials, mediums and subjects, never settling on a single style. “The only thing that matters to me is being completely and utterly in the present moment,” he says. “This is the essence of creativity.”
